Interview with Huck Gee

You may have noticed the infamous Huck Gee, or Mark Gee, blew up our booth at Comic Con and is featured both on the cover and within Color Ink Book Volume 23! Learn more about Huck Gee as a designer, toy maker, illustrator and all around phenomenal artist, and visit his site at

ADAM: What first got you into the toy scene?
HUCK GEE: Discovering the creations of Jason Siu, Eric So and Michael Lau around the year 2000. It was their creations that sparked my interest in toy and art design.

Tell us a little about your interest in automobiles and race cars.
It’s fun! It’s fast! And a ridiculous money pit! Kids, please don’t get involved in cars, pick up a nice comfy drug habit instead. Way more affordable.

Do you have a favorite type of design work you like to do?
Anything character based. It’s what I excel at because it’s what I enjoy the most. Creating new characters and new worlds for them to inhabit.

How important is it to you to keep your products made and sourced locally?
At the minute, it simply makes the most sense to me. I like simplicity. And doing everything locally is the simplest way I can product my work. The moral and ethical benefits of producing everything locally is just icing on the cake.

Do you have any super secret projects in the works?
Oh yes. Super secret is super secret.

If you had to live in any other country which one would it be?
Hmmm… not sure I can answer that. Too many to choose from. Maybe the UK. Maybe somewhere more remote like Cambodia. Depends on what my goals are. Did I win the lottery in this hypothetical question?

What are your thoughts on social media?
Evil necessity. I try my best to not waste my life glued to a screen. But in this day and age, if you want to effectively run a business, it’s sort of an evil necessity to repeatedly interact with your fans. Love/Hate it.

Do you have any pets?
I have a little jerk named Kira. Take off her leash and she’s a timid little 10 lb chihuahua. On leash, with me leading, and she suddenly things she’s a 100 lb pit bull. Starts talking s*** to anyone and everyone. Love that little jerk.

How does a typical day start for you?
Checking email. Although, I’ve been making a concentrated effort to spend the first hour of every day drawing. Before firing up a computer or doing anything else. It’s been a troubled endeavor.

If you had to choose a different career, what would it be and why?
There’s a part of me that has the urge to walk away from everything and go and teach kids in Cambodia. Get away from this rat race and do something truly rewarding with my life.

When are we going to be able to get our filthy, dirty hands on Battle Tails?!
Well, if my developers are correct, it should be available to the masses by the time the next issue hits the printer. One can hope.

Anything you would like to tell your fans?
Eep Ack Choo

Sandwich or burrito?
Oh sonofab****. That’s tough. Sandwich… maybe… by a hair.
