When did you decide art was your life?
I’ve enjoyed drawing for as long as I can remember. I think I was pretty young, maybe 9 or 10, when I knew that I all I wanted to do “when I grow up” was draw.
What is your favorite comic?
Growing up, my favorite character was always Wolverine. Now he’s kind of a pussy, but back in the 80’s and early 90’s he was a violent savage. My favorite series was the Weapon X story in Marvel Comics Presents. I was pretty pissed when the movie came out, cause it just shit all over the story.
Two black and white cats, Whiskers and Dexter. Whiskers wandered over to my house after his previous owner (my old neighbor) abandoned him after he was evicted. The poor cat was malnourished and scared, so I took him to the vet and fed him. After spending a few hundred bucks in vet bills, he became mine.
What are your favorite tools of the trade?
I really love using ink. I’ll use crow-quills, pens, nice expensive brushes and shitty cheap brushes.
I’m trying to do more comic shows this year. I’ll be at Seattle-Con, Wonder-Con and Comic-Con in the immediate future. I’m also doing more sculpting and building lately, I’ve been documenting some of my recent projects over at my blog.
Who or what do you look to for inspiration?
For me, inspiration comes from all kinds of different places. Sometimes I’ll sit and read comics or look through art books. Or I’ll hangout with other creative friends, drink a few beers and just talk about ideas or techniques. Most of the time its just as easy as getting the hell out of my studio and going for a walk to clear my head. All these things take me to a good place, mentally, where I can relax and get some good work done.
Ha. I could probably use some words of wisdom myself. My observation is – you must have a genuine passion for art. If the talent and drive is there, someone will notice.
How do you spend your free time, i.e. ice fishing, drinking, bungee jumping etc.
I’ve been doing more outdoors stuff lately. When the weather is decent I try and go for a long bike ride in the hills, or go hiking. I got a kayak last year and did some good fishing from it. But I also really enjoy watching movies or playing video games with friends. And I assure you I can do all of these thing while drinking.
Kind of an inside joke. After a few too many beers one night, I announced to my friends as I was heading off to my room – “I’m outta here. Gonna go masturbate, play with knives, and cry myself to sleep.” Plus, davecorreia.com was already taken.
What is your all time favorite video game? And why?
So hard to pick just one! If I’m going for “all time favorite” I’d have to say the original DOOM. Yea, there are plenty of games I’ve played since then that have better graphics and story, but DOOM kicked my ass when I was 15! I remember constantly drawing all the demons, and trying to come up with my own. That game gave me nightmares for months.
Honorable mention: Resident Evil 4, Fallout 3, Monkey Island, God of War and the first Zelda.
I’ll have the Reuben sandwich on marble rye with a side of fries and a coke, thanks.
