Words from Scarecrowoven

Do you have a favorite creature movie? If so what and why?

Making me choose my favorite creature movie is like asking me to choose which one of my children I love most, but, I don’t have children, so that should make it easier.  “The Monster That Challenged the World” stands as one of my all time favorites because on the surface as a design he is simply brilliant and bares no resemblance to anything that was done at the time. he really didn’t have hands that could grab you or a giant mouth to eat you with, he was terrifying in shape, and as a presence, was repulsive because he seemed real in the sense that his body was the evolution of a simple organism like a worm, snail or slug.

Where did the moniker Scarecrowoven come from?

Scarecrowoven was the name given to me by the ghost tribe that visited me when I was a child. I still don’t know completely what it means, but that is part of the journey.

Conan or Beastmaster?

My blood is Cimmerian and Crom laughs at your two winds, Kodo and Podo, but they are awfully cute.

Who has influenced your art the most?

I think I’m influenced more by movies and music more than anything, however, I got turned on to Egon Schiele at a real young age and for the first time realized that you didn’t have to be a French impressionist painter to be an artist. Later down the road skateboard artists like Jim Phillips, comic book artists like Katsuhiro Ottomo and animators like John K. paved the way for my mind to be more open to what art could be. I think there is something really cool happening in the art world now that’s supper fresh and sorta breaks down a lot of walls that have been paved over for way too long.

You art has a hint of a 70’s horror comic feel to it. Are you a fan or that era of comics?

Ya totally, one of the first comics I ever got was Arak son of thunder issue number 6, I think it may be closer to early 80’s than 70’s but the cover is brilliant. I didn’t read it because I couldn’t really read at the time, but, I came up with all these stories behind what was going on, on the cover and apply that to all my work today. I also love all the classic EC comics.

What was the first band you saw live?

MC Hammer

Who are you listening to right now?

Nine inch Nails, The Doors, Grotus, Steel Pole Bath Tub, Emerson Lake and Palmer, Continues, The Knife, Glass Candy, Dandi Wind……

Gremlins or Ghoulies?

I love Ghoulies 1, 2 and 3 and get really confused when i talk to people and they haven’t heard of or seen them, but, no one can do what Joe Dante does to the silver screen. He’s incredibly under-rated and i say a little prayer every night before i go to bed that someday he will make Gremlins 3 without any computer generated imagery. But, it’ll never happen.
