Words from Tharp

Where do you find your inspiration?

I get inspired by lots of things my kids, movies, and TV.  Usually inspiration tends to hit me when I am driving or if I am sitting alone with my sketchbook.  Doodling is also a huge piece of inspiration for me.  I practice doodling everyday. Also I do a lot of people watching some great ideas can come out of watching people.

What would be the most unusual place you would like to visit?

I’ve never thought of this.  I assume we are taking time travel into consideration.  I think it would be cool to do a Back to the Future thing and go back in the 50s. It would also be pretty rad to go back the caveman times just to see what it was like.  Would totally suck though when I get my head ripped of by some massive dino!

How long have you been creating art? and what lead you down this path?

I knew I wanted to be an artist when I was around 6.  It was just one of those things that “clicked” for me and I felt I was good at.  I have been a professional artist for 11 years.

I loved the Flintstones, Woody Woodpecker and The Jetsons when I was a kid.  I am a huge Tex Avery fan.  Guess it was around middle school when I figured out these people get paid to create these awesome characters.  It was then that I put all my effort into perusing the goal of being a character artist.

What is the best movie you have seen in the last year?

What a tough question! I have seen so many movies over the past year.  I really like the Human Experience. Although recently I watched Hear No Evil , See No Evil forgot how funny that movie was.

Do you prefer to play sports or watch?

Definitely playing sports.

Are there any super secret projects you are working on that you can tell us about?

I have teamed up with another Ohio based company and we are working on a new brand called Ohiya.   It is really fun, cute, and sometimes creepy characters.  The website is www.ohiyafriends.com.  There are super secret projects underway for Ohiya but you’ll just have to stay tuned.

When the CIB family comes to visit you in Ohio what is the first thing we need to do?

If it is football season tailgating for OSU game would be tops.  If not, we would hit up the great food scene here in Columbus.  Come with a empty stomach!

All time favorite video game, movie, band, and TV show.

Man your making me think!

Video game- Karnov (old Nintendo game) First game I beat and played that game for hours!

Movie- Forrest Gump or Goonies

Band- Guns n Roses

TV Show- Wonder Years (when I was a kid) now though really dig Always Sunny.

What do you like to do on the weekends?

I like chilling with my wife and kids.  I am pretty much a homebody. Lately though working seems to consume my weekends.

Out of all the characters you create, do you have a favorite?

My favorite character as of late is Smeat Stevens.  He is the lead singer of Smooch (a monster hair band). Smooch is part of the Ohiya project.

What is the weirdest thing you have eaten?

Spider rolls. They are really tasty but it was the look of them that took me second to get over.

Is there anything you would like to add to this interview?

Thanks for asking me to be part of such an awesome book!

Guess the last thing I would throw out there would be how much I love what I do.  For all those out there that want to pursue the arts, it is a awesome gig!  Be prepared to work your butt off! You will fail many times and people will not like what you do.  Stay true to your dream and the right people will find you!

Sandwich or Burrito??
