Words from Tom Haubrick

What medium do you prefer to work in?

I love working with ink and wash. It’s taken me years to finally settle on what I want to stick with for a while. I want to start back with watercolors again. I love the looseness one can get from them.

How would you describe the people you paint, or your artwork in general?

I generally try to keep them mysterious or even eerie. i tend to stay on the darker side of things.

One word to describe yourself?

Hot Dog or Egg Roll?

Nathan’s Hot Dogs. I can’t wait to back to Coney Island and get them from the source.

Where does the focus of your inspiration come from?

A lot of my pieces are based off of life experiences and my surroundings. I also am influenced from the music I listen to. It gets me steered in the right direction if I’m out of inspiration.

What’s your favorite tattoo?

I really don’t have one specific tattoo in mind, but I am really partial to old school tattoos and I really love when people take that style and really make it there own.

What did you want to be when you grew up?

I always wanted to animate for Disney cartoons. I still would one-day love for my drawings to be animated. I also wanted to be a caricature artist, it seemed like fun.

What music are you listening to right now?

I’ve been actually having trouble finding new music to listen to these days, so I’ve been going back and listing to all my old CDs while putting them onto iTunes.

Love shellac, Descendants, Murder City Devils, Led Zeppelin, and pretty much anything John Reis is involved in.

How long does it generally take you to complete a piece?

I can finish a medium sized piece within two nights of working.  It’s the thought process that takes the longest for me.

What’s your 2010 New Year’s resolution?

I actually gave up fast food this year. I really needed to cut that stuff out. It’s going pretty well.  I really should have given up beer.

Is there anything you want to tell us about coming up?

What I can tell you about is I’m working toward putting out a comic this year. It’s been a pretty slow process since I’m not really a writer and all.  I really would love to break into that field for a while.  I’m also looking forward to a show in New York later this year. Should be a good year.

Sandwich or burrito?

This is a rough one… burrito probably. You can’t trust anyone who doesn’t like Mexican food.
